What a thrill! Richard has been asked to be the first jazz musician to play on the rockers hockey team at the Juno Cup! He's been playing hockey all year long with fellow jazz musicians and can't wait to lace 'em up against former NHL greats. What an honour - kind of scary, really!

In his own words....

Yesterday, when I found out about the Juno I was, of course, excited! First I called my girlfriend, then my mom, and then.....Jim Cuddy. Why JC, you ask? Well it turns out that my old Blue Rodeo buddy puts together the Juno musicians hockey team for the Juno Cup, a friendly game between NHL old-timers and musicians. I am absolutely hockey mad this year, so I knew as soon as I heard the news that I was nominated that I would love to be part of the game...Do the Gordie Howe hat trick (A goal, an assist and a fight) for the Junos...A nomination, a gig, the hockey game! So I called Jim Cuddy and left this message...'Hey Coach, it's Crusher. I know you're playing the Juno game, and figure you could use a fourth line grinder who could dig out the puck or at worst, offer you a little protection as an enforcer... (we've played hockey before and let's say there was some unfortunate physical play dealt by me). I know the team is mostly rockers, but I think it would be good to get a little jazz representation on the ice... Lemme know if you need me.'

So today he called back and said ' We'd love to have you, we've never had a jazzer on the team before, at least not one of your size!" Cracked me up. So here I am, representing the jazzers in the Juno hockey game...Only problem is that although I'm a pretty good skater, I have a terrible shot, and am probably in the bottom 1/3 of jazz hockey players in Canada. Well, guess what? I'm gonna work on that shot...and if Bobby Clark is playing, he better watch his ankle (some Russians will pay me to break it, no)...Oh just kidding! Anyway. Thanks Jim. Thanks Junos. I'm so into it!

My nickname in jazz hockey in Undrapov, as there is a great jazz player and hockey ace, Andrew Boniwell who we call Bonikarovsky...and Undrapov...Too bad Mike Murley is going to be in Sweden..he's a good player.

The puck drops in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where the 4th Annual Juno Cup game takes to the ice at the Art Hauser Centre on Friday, March 30th at 7 p.m. (CT) as part of this year's Juno Weekend Events. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced the first round of all-star and celebrity players confirmed for the annual JUNO Awards hockey tradition benefiting CARAS' music education program, MusiCan.

MTV has announced broadcast details for the match, which for the first time will allow music and hockey fans from across the country to participate in the action. The 2007 Juno Cup airs live on MTV on Friday, March 30 at 9 p.m. ET as well as on MTV.ca, CTV.ca and TSN.ca.

Saskatchewan native and hometown hockey hero Wendel Clark will lace-up for the NHL Greats as he reunites with his Toronto Maple Leafs team mates Russ Courtnall and Gary Leeman who all belonged to the legendary TML line-up dubbed by hockey fans as 'the Hound Line', nicknamed because all three players are alumni of Saskatchewan's Notre Dame Hounds.

Also confirmed to play is Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame member Paul Coffey and hockey great Mark Napier, who both fit in perfectly with their fellow all-star players. A stellar line-up with the power of Clark aka 'Captain Crunch', the scoring prowess of Coffey, the skating skills of Courtnall, puck-handling of Leeman and blinding speed of Mark Napier, the NHL Greats will be a tough team to beat. Former New York Islander Brad Dalgarno, Toronto Maple Leaf Mike Pelyk and tough guy Bob Probert will also play for the NHL Greats at this year's Juno Cup.

On the opposing team, returning to The Rockers line-up is last year's team captain Jim Cuddy, who will join artists Barney Bentall, George Canyon, Jon Gallant (Billy Talent), Richard Underhill, Sam Roberts, Sloan members Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott, and Tomi Swick at centre ice.
